Intermodal Information
Services Add Value, Continue
to Increase Participation
IANA's Intermodal Information
Services achieved several goals during
2017, including successful expansion of
multiple programs to enhance operational
efficiency and equipment interchange
throughout the industry.
The advancements were focused
particularly on the Bad Order Equipment
Status and Street Interchange Application
programs.
The BOES program, which facilitates
the process of identifying bad order/good
order equipment status, is now functioning throughout the BNSF Railway system
at 24 terminals, earning positive reviews
for its ability to improve service. The information generated by BOES is distributed
instantaneously to intermodal equipment
providers and terminal operations staff as
well as to maintenance and repair vendor
personnel.
"IANA has provided and will continue
to offer a wide variety of new and innovative services, such as BOES," said Debbie
Sasko, assistant vice president of IIS at
IANA. "These additional services, in combination with the well-established UIIA,
add meaningful value to the industry's
participants and customers alike."
An important upcoming addition to
BOES will be a new mobile application,
providing another efficient method for
updating equipment status information.
Maintenance and repair vendors and IEPs
on terminal will be able to release or place

equipment in bad order status by simply
using a mobile device versus an office
computer. The new BOES mobile application is tentatively scheduled for midDecember release and will be available on
both iOS and Android operating systems
for both smartphones and tablets.
Sasko said other railroads are continuing to evaluate how and when they could
implement BOES.

New Participants
Another recent BOES advancement
is the participation of Direct ChassisLink
at BNSF terminals in Memphis, Pearland
and Chicago as well as FlexiVan at BNSF
terminals in Los Angeles and Oakland.
The continued adoption of BOES by industry stakeholders, such as these two IEPs,
further enhances BOES' value, Sasko said.
The adoption of the Street Interchange
Application has expanded this year, and
will include all Hapag-Lloyd U.S. locations
by the end of 2017. Currently, three other
major ocean carriers, Mediterranean Shipping, Hyundai Merchant Marine and Yang
Ming, use the SIA.
At a recent meeting of the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association,
IANA provided an overview of the SIA in
addition to one-on-one demonstrations
of the SIA's functionalities, workflow and
web interface.
"We are hopeful that the multiple
steps we have taken to describe the advantages of the SIA will lead to wider use
of the application among ocean carriers,"
Sasko said. "Increasing that participation
will be one of our priorities for 2018."

As 2017 draws to a close, Milestone
Chassis Company LLC and Milestone
Equipment Company LLC will have been
added to the UIIA as new equipment
provider participants. UIIA motor carriers
are being notified of the necessary requirements they need to provide in order to
establish a valid interchange.
These companies join North American Chassis Pool Cooperative, CCM and
Bridge Chassis Supply LLC as the chassis providers that have recently elected
to take advantage of the benefits of UIIA
participation.
IANA continues its educational initiative with new webinars demonstrating the
enhanced functionality made available in
the Global Intermodal Equipment Registry
as well as the BOES enhancements completed earlier in 2017.
