In Memoriam
Jim Johnston, the longtime
president and CEO of the OwnerOperator Independent Drivers
Association, died in early January
at age 78. He led the organization
for 43 years as it grew to represent
small business truckers in all segments of the industry.
"The trucking industry has
lost a visionary and crusader for
the rights of all truckers," noted
Johnston
Todd Spencer, OOIDA's executive
vice president, in a statement. Spencer now is serving as the
group's acting president.
Ronald Lefcourt, who co-founded Alliance Shippers
Inc. and was its president since 1977, passed away in early
January. He was 82.
He began working in the less-than-truckload industry after
completing high school, and soon created Alliance, which
was one of the early supporters of intermodal. Over the years,
the company evolved under his leadership to provide overthe-road, temperature control, international, warehouse and
distribution services as well as intermodal.

CSX President and CEO
E. Hunter Harrison, age 74, died
in December during his first year
heading the fourth major railroad
in a career that spanned more than
four decades.
Harrison began his career
on the St. Louis-San Francisco
Railway, known as the Frisco
before it became part of Burlington
Northern. He stayed with Burlington
Harrison
Northern before moving to the Illinois
Central Railroad, where he rose to the rank of CEO. He later
became CEO of Canadian National Railway before retiring in
2009. Three years later, he became CEO at Canadian Pacific
Railway. He left that post early in January to take over at CSX.
James Foote, who was chief operating officer at CSX and a
former CN colleague, now is CEO of the railroad.
James D. Martin, who was president of public relations
and advertising agency JDM & Associates Marketing LLC,
died late last year at 74. He was well-known in the intermodal
industry because of his service representing Hub Group as the
company's presence grew in the industry.
