A DAY IN THE LIFE

Jenny represents her peers in the
media when weather becomes a
big issue in the Ottawa area. She
appeared twice in May 2017 to talk
about the flooding, once in January
2019 to advise viewers on winter
driving and twice more this spring
once again discussing flooding in
the area.

f you're a broker in the Ottawa area and have taken your CAIB or attended a broker event,
you've probably met Jenny Desroches, Operations Manager at Tanner Insurance and
current Vice President of the Ottawa Insurance Brokers Association (OIBA). Jenny's been
at Tanner Insurance for over sixteen years, starting as a Personal Lines CSR and working
her way up to Operations Manager. This is a day in her life.

6:30AM-7:00AM: I wake up and get ready for the day. Before getting out of bed I

often check my email and the weather. I check in with my 17-year-old daughter and
13-year-old son to let them know what time it is and what the weather is looking like.
8:10AM-8:20AM: I arrive at Tanner Insurance, make tea and have breakfast at my

desk while I log on and record my daily voicemail message.
8:30AM-9:00AM: I try to get an uninterrupted half hour to check new articles coming

through various industry sources - IBAO, Canadian Underwriter, LinkedIn, etc.
9:00AM-11:30AM: Most mornings include a variety of activities ranging from

meetings with staff, handling escalations, general operations and process management.
11:30AM: I leave to attend a monthly broker luncheon run by OIBA.
2:00PM: Afternoons are a continuation of office requirements as they arise.

TIE BOTH MY INSURANCE
EXPERTISE WITH MY DEGREE
IN PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY.
I'M STILL VERY PASSIONATE
ABOUT WEATHER-RELATED
TOPICS AND NATURAL
DISASTERS AND PULL THE TWO
TOGETHER ANY CHANCE I GET.
THERE'S STILL SO MUCH THAT
THE GENERAL PUBLIC NEEDS
TO LEARN ABOUT WATER
COVERAGE SO IT'S IMPORTANT
BROKERS STAY VISIBLE.

5:30PM-6:30PM: I typically leave the office around this time - varies on a day-to-day

basis and take part in a much needed weekly yoga class.
6:30PM-8:30PM: I attend baseball games for both my kids. They play 2-4 times a week,

sometimes on the same night. We have dinner at the field these nights.
7:00PM-9:00PM: I clean up, make lunch for the next day and poke at the kids to make

theirs. I work on my FCIP course and often pop online to work a bit. If I'm trying to relax
I'll play a computer game, currently Lumosity and Hay Day are my guilty pleasures.
9:30PM-11:00PM: I wind down for the night by watching Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I'm currently watching Madam Secretary and Miss Maisel - I like a good drama series.
Otherwise I read a few pages of the latest book I have on the go.
