DB: I had an excellent time at the YBC
Conference. Niagara is a beautiful and
interesting place. The arcades on every
corner reminded me of my childhood in the
90s-I wanted to throw my old No Fear shirt
and baggy jeans on and go hang out playing
Street Fighter and Skee Ball.
The Pitch to Win competition was one of the
best parts of the event. I had a great group
and we learned a lot during our presentation
and while watching others. Next time I'll
definitely take a different approach. The
second, and best part was the people. From
my out-of-province posse to my new friends
and colleagues in Ontario, everyone was very
welcoming and personable. Thank you for
the hospitality!

DB: I'm doing a lot of research and interviews
with InsureTech and will be reviewing our
internal processes. Brokers are the real
experts in the insurance industry. We need
to be able to offer easy, effective ways for
our clients to do business with us and offer
efficiencies and knowledge to better handle
their expectations.
TR: The best method for this new era of the
broker channel is to establish a multi-prong
approach. This can be accomplished by offering
consumers' choice on how they deal with us. At
my family's brokerage, we've been working hard
at implementing a digital strategy that has the
right amount of human contact.
HOW IS YOUR ASSOCIATION
IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING
TALENT?
AT: Our Young Broker's Network is a force
to be reckoned with right now. With huge
support from our association and IBAS
Board, it's allowed us to get creative in how
we operate. We've had the opportunity
to host our Summit of Young Insurance
Professionals-a day focusing on young
(or young at heart) brokers, underwriters,
adjusters and insurance stakeholders at
similar stages of their career for a one-day
forum focused on relationship building,
professional development and best practice.
DB: This is a big focus for us-we have a
shortage of quality brokers in Alberta.
TR: I was honoured to have been given the
opportunity to attend YBC this year and
really had no idea what to expect. We don't
have anything like it in Manitoba-the
conference was incredible. The team that
planned it did an excellent job of making
it educational, fun and relative to young
brokers. Being in an industry where young
people are hard to come by, it was exciting
to see how Ontario is educating and
encouraging young brokers. Although the
Pitch to Win competition was amazing, I have
to say my favourite part was the opportunity
to meet so many young brokers and hearing
their stories on how they got into the
industry.

AT: I think the biggest thing is to accept
the industry change that's forever evolving
in front of us as an opportunity. It's been
a benefit to collaborate with fellow young
broker heads across the country-we're
stronger when we work together. Being able
to share experiences and find ways to work
