HISTORIC ROOTS
Established in 1639, Le Monastère des Augustines in Quebec City was the first
hospital complex in North America. Its restoration and rebirth complete in 2015,
the modern interpretation of the monastery is a unique blend of culture, history,
and wellness. Today, the award-winning property includes a museum, healing center,
hotel, archives, reserve, and gardens. The sustainably operated facilities welcome
guests into a unique experience in holistic health rooted in the very heritage of the
Augustinian Sisters.
The July/August issue of i+D will dig into the topics of historic preservation and
adaptive reuse and investigate the ways in which historic design can inform and live
harmoniously amid the current built environment. The benefits of saving historic
properties affect us on educational, cultural, and emotional levels and prove we don't
always have to tear things down to start something new.
