Les dilemmes éthiques et
politiques devraient faire
réﬂéchir les designers
et, idéalement, leur faire
élaborer un plan d'action

S'ÉTAIT ÉCOULÉ DEPUIS QUE LA CHAMBRE DES REPRÉSENTANTS EUT APPROUVÉ LES
RÉSOLUTIONS DE DESTITUTION CONTRE DONALD TRUMP, LE 45e PRÉSIDENT DES
ÉTATS-UNIS. LE DRAME POLITIQUE DEVAIT SE POURSUIVRE DANS LA PRESSE (ET SUR
TWITTER) ALORS QUE LE PROCÈS SE DÉPLAÇAIT DEVANT LE SÉNAT. ET, PARMI LES
CLAMEURS, UNE CHOSE EST DEMEURÉE CLAIRE : LE PAYS EST ENTRAÎNÉ DANS
UN SCANDALE.

Leur façon de réagir compte pour beaucoup, parce qu'il incombe aux designers d'avoir une conduite
éthique, tant envers le public qu'envers leur profession. Faute de quoi, non seulement paraîtront-ils mal
sur le plan personnel, mais aussi feront-ils mal paraître l'industrie dans son ensemble. C'est en partie
pourquoi l'ASID publie et met en application son code de déontologie et de conduite professionnelle,
exigeant de ses membres qu'ils « exercent leur profession de manière à inspirer le respect des clients
et des fournisseurs de biens et services auprès de la profession et de leurs collègues, ainsi qu'auprès du
public en général. » De même, Designers d'intérieur du Canada (DIC) publie un code de conduite pour
son symposium annuel de design et pour les membres de son Conseil d'administration.
Bien que de telles lignes directrices soient instructives, elles ne sont néanmoins pas exhaustives. Il
arrivera des situations où les designers devront faire le choix d'adhérer à leurs valeurs personnelles
et professionnelles ou de faire des compromis. C'est pourquoi i+D s'est récemment entretenu avec
plusieurs professionnels chevronnés pour tenter de comprendre ces eaux politiques et éthiques
souvent troubles.

Bien que la plupart des professionnels du design qui liront ceci ne feront jamais l'expérience du
genre de controverse qui se joue dans les grands titres de l'actualité, l'industrie n'est pas à l'abri de la
politique ou de pratiques commerciales douteuses. Les dilemmes éthiques n'ont aucun parti pris ; la
plupart des designers devront probablement faire face, au cours de leur carrière, à des situations de
cette nature qui remettront en question leurs idéaux et mettront peut-être leur intégrité à l'épreuve.
