No Barriers
A zero-step entry is one of the tenets of accessible
design that designers note should become a general rule,
regardless of the ability level of the homeowner.

Progress and Potential
"We've come a long way," says Leslie Shankman-Cohn, partner
and principal of Jill Hertz Interior Design, "but we still have a
long way to go." She points out that the ADA guidelines only
apply to public spaces not to residential housing, and that
certain industries-such as airlines-are not regulated by
the ADA. Shankman-Cohn finds herself applying the tenets of
ADA-compliant design to many of her residential projects, and
she has become known for her work that incorporates elements
appropriate for aging in place. (She's even claimed the service
mark, "Aging in Style!")
In recent years, Shankman-Cohn has seen an evolution
towards design features that accommodate a wider variety
of homeowners, such as primary bedrooms on the main floor,
curbless showers or wet bathrooms, and open floor plans.
"These are all parts of universal design that are being introduced
into the general public's vision without it being hammered
over their heads [that it's intended for accessibility]," she says,
adding, "Millennials and younger people are asking for these
things, without realizing the background of them. They're seeing
it as fresh and contemporary."
And slowly but surely, the types of materials and features
needed to create accessible spaces are becoming more readily
available on the American market-and also more attractive.
"Grab bars [for showers or toilets] used to be really ugly and
institutional looking," notes Shankman-Cohn. "Now plumbing
fixture companies like Delta and Kohler are making bars that
match their suite of fixtures. They're aesthetically pleasing
and don't look like a hospital." In the past, she would have to
custom-design features such as pull-out steps in a kitchen or
cabinets that can lower to an accessible height, but now she
says she finds some of these types of components available
even at big-box hardware stores.
