How will future curriculum
reflect designers' role in this
new, post-pandemic world?

I don't see the designer's role, per se, changing postpandemic. The use and occupation of spaces has already
changed during COVID-19 as private, domestic spaces
became public spaces of work, entertainment, and
performance. Shopping malls have become housing, and
workplace furniture systems have become distributed,
individual at-home desks. These and other new modes of
occupation will continue to require designers who have
the technical and conceptual skills necessary to visualize,
develop, and communicate the design of spaces for
human occupation.

How did the pandemic
emphasize the need for healthcare
design that considers all those
who experience medical facilities:
the patients, staff, and visitors?

Molly Baker
User experience has long been a primary driver of healthcare design,
including clear wayfinding and the use of healthy and durable
materials. In light of COVID-19, an extra focus has been placed
on spaces of respite. Where can guests of patients go to take a deep
breath or make a personal call? Is there a quiet, private space that
allows people in their most vulnerable state to feel and be safe? How
are we designing space to help care for the mental health of our
healthcare workers? Do they have an escape?
We are beginning to take special care in the design of family rooms,
consult spaces, and staff lounges. Our physical environment has an
incredible impact on our wellbeing. It is our honor and responsibility
to design healthcare spaces that positively impact our communities.
