How can the design
profession lead by example
on issues of diversity,
inclusion, and equality?

I think as a community, as a profession, design has been
more open. We've allowed women and people of color to
take on more leadership roles, but we can always do better.
Our attention was on diversity and inclusion because of the
pandemic. We were all cooped up in our houses and not
distracted by other things. So, this has been one of the most
positive things to come out of last year. We have a small
firm, and these issues are always on our minds when we hire
or when we look at people for promotion.
When I speak to my colleagues who own firms or are in
leadership positions with big or mid-size companies, we've
all noted that it's been difficult to attract students of color.
There's a lot of women now, and I think the balance is
just about 50-50 these days, which is great. Among young
people and students interested in design though, it's not as
diverse as it can be.
I think we really need to look at professional development
and leadership development across the board. In design,
there are more jobs for different personality types. It is
important to stress that everybody has a role to play, and
this next generation is already very used to collaborative
work. If interns or younger employees express interest in
developing interpersonal skills, we need to support that
in any way that we can.
