This article describes an effort of the ASP of IEEE, Aerospace Electronic Systems Society to promote avionics
education and bridge the gap between relevant industry,
related professional organizations and academia. A comprehensive framework for avionics engineering within
curricula is provided, framed within the context of a body
of knowledge for avionics engineering, the practical constraints important to practice, and the career opportunities
in modern avionics. A vast domain of theoretical and practical knowledge is encompassed by the field of avionics
that offers a breadth and depth of contemporary research
and innovation initiatives benefiting all stakeholders
involved. Suitable options for undergraduate, graduate,
and professional development curricula are presented to
help scope degree or certificate programs in avionics and
to facilitate the rapid uptake and efficient deployment of
new graduates in the ever-growing avionics industry sector. To the ASP knowledge, this is the first comprehensive
article focusing on the development of a contemporary
avionics curricula for the 21st century and proposing a
practically implementable framework for enhancing education and learning in the field of avionics engineering at
all levels, vis-a-vis industrial requirements. While it is
likely that these suggestions would not be adopted everywhere in their entirety, this article provides a solid baseline for avionics engineering curricula developments,
which will guide future efforts in the aerospace sector
toward maximizing the synergies between the industrial
community and academia.
