detach the lander from the sky crane, repair it, replace the bag, and
repeat the autoclaving and bag sealing.
Figure 8 illustrates how the sky crane's motor-and-reel system
will reside on the bottom of the docking plate, which remains attached to the sky crane. The lander will be attached to the docking
plate by release pins and the pulley system that lowers it. Before it
unreels, the cords attached to the collar will unzip or rip the protective bag surrounding the lander. When the sky crane begins to lower
the lander, it will trigger the release pins to unlatch the lander; it will
begin unreeling the lander; at the same time, the umbilical cable
will unplug from the lander. At the end of unreeling, the pulley will
release the lander to settle on Europa's surface. The torn bag will
stay on the docking plate with the sky crane as it departs Europa.
PROPOSED MISSION FOR A LANDER ON EUROPA

Nine spacecraft have studied Jupiter and its moons over the past
45 y [32], [33]. There are four current and proposed missions to
Jupiter. In an earlier paper [6], we compared the relative merits of
AUGUST 2018
these missions as evidence for feasibility of this current proposal.
As mandated and planned, the Europa Multiple Flyby mission will
use the SLS, launch in July 2022, and arrive at Europa by March
2025, a flight of less than 3 y [34].
The lander we propose could either piggyback on the SLS or
use a separate Atlas V 551 or Delta IV Heavy booster. The choice
of launch booster will depend on the developmental success of the
SLS. Use of either the Atlas V 551 or the Delta IV Heavy will require gravity assist from Earth and Venus, which extends the travel
time to about 7 y.
As the lander approaches Europa, it would go through a series
of maneuvers, with the following notes:

To reduce radiation exposure, an orbital insertion around Europa and landing should be of short duration.
A sky crane would place the lander on the surface of Europa,
much like Curiosity on Mars [35], [36].
To provide planetary protection, the sky crane would fly to
destruction in Jupiter after depositing the lander.
