and send them to the microcontroller
by a digital interface. This digital interface consists of clock and data wires,
where the data are sent 1 byte at time.
The current is sensed in range of 0 to
100 A by the Hall effect current sensor ACS770 (Allegro MicroSystems),
which provides a voltage proportional
to the current delivered as per the needs
of the UAS power consumption. This
voltage is acquired on the CH0 input
pin of the microcontroller, using the
embedded 10-bit ADC. To measure
the battery voltage, voltage divider circuitry is provided. This adapts the battery output voltage to a level suitable
for the CH1 input pin of the microcontroller (Figure 7). The current and
voltage measurements are sequentially
acquired using the multiplexer embedded on the microcontroller. The GY-85
inertial measurement unit communicates with the ATmega328 via the I2C
interface.
A flowchart describing the software implemented on the ATmega328
microcontroller is depicted in Figure 8.
At the beginning, an USB initialization
routine is performed to initialize the
communication between the PC and
the microcontroller and to configure
the baud rate at 115,200 bit/s. To start
the data acquisition, the microcontroller must receive a start command
from the PC by the USB interface.
When the start command is received,
the initialization of a timer is performed. The timer is set to generate
an overflow event every 20 ms. If the
overflow occurs, the microcontroller
reads, sequentially, the data provided
by load cells, Hall-effect current sensor, voltage divider, accelerometer,
gyroscope, and magnetometer; thus, a
packet with all data is sent to the PC
via USB every 20 ms. The data acquisition routine can be stopped by sending a stop command via USB.
In Figure 9, a top-view photo of the
DronesBench platform is presented.
The sensing tips of the three load cells
are attached to the accommodation
plane, while the other fixture tips are
connected through the chains to the
test bench frame. Furthermore, the load
