Integrating Multiband Active and Passive Radar for Enhanced Situational Awareness
CONCLUSION
In many applications, the fusion of heterogeneous sensor
data shows the potential to provide improved results when
compared to a purely homogeneous setup. This article has
confirmed this potential using of data collected during the
multinational NATO APART-GAS measurement campaign.
Multiband active and passive radar sensors from various
vendors together provided surveillance of civil and
military aircraft in a region with a diameter ofmore than 500
kilometers. The different and, in part, complementary properties
ofactive and passive radar technologies clearly added
up to enhanced situational awareness. Despite the positive
results achieved so far, there surely is enough growth potential
left. After all, the data fusion received data from the different
sensors that otherwise were operated in a completely
independent manner. There was no feedback from the fusion
to the sensors whatsoever. Especially when equipped with
an active electronically scanned array antenna, the resources
of an active radar might be used in a much more effective
way based on such feedback. Although less prominently,
passive radar could make use offeedback, too, by, e.g., adaptively
selecting relevant transmitters. For an optimized
resource allocation across sensors, deep integration of both
sensor technologies is a goal to pursue.
