given. Blasi et al. [13] described the control architecture
and the control laws ofa new concept ofmodular iron bird
aimed at reproducing flight loads to test mobile aerodynamic
control surface actuators for small- and mediumsize
A/C and unmanned aerial vehicles, while Berri et al.
[14] designed and developed a planetary gearbox for EMA
test bench through additive manufacturing.
A current state ofthe art EMA test bench is, for example,
DLR's Electronic Flight Control System Rig [15]. This
bench allows for the model validation of the EMA and testing
of new sensor concepts for condition monitoring,
whereby dynamic load simulation is performed using
hydraulic actuators. A similar approach was taken in [16] to
test a swashplate helicopter electromechanical actuation system,
while other dedicated test benches for A/C, helicopter,
and aerospace actuators can be found in [17] and [18]. While
previous research have already developed technology to test
new EMA systems, there is not a modular and flexible
solution yet able to evaluate the coupled performance of
different combinations of airplane surfaces' EMAs, allowing
for high-level multisystem verification.
This work describes the design of a flexible and complete
test rig for the on-ground complete evaluation and
validation of EMAs and corresponding control systems
that will equip the control surfaces included in the wings
with the Clean Sky 2 Regional Flight Test Bed 2 (FTB2)
demonstrator. Novel test bench architecture is proposed
that allows not only EMAs to be tested against their
hydraulic counterparts, but also the performance of several
surface EMAs to be tested (together (see Figure 1);
ailerons, flaps, spoilers, winglets, etc.), alone and
even with real A/C control systems and electrical sources.
