AESS: A Vibrant and Progressive Society

THE IEEE AEROSPACE and ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS SOCIETY (AESS) has gone through a metamorphosis of sorts
over the last few years. The AESS has a strong foundation in its mission, and we have moved forward with our strategic
plan, building on the wisdom of the past. This has brought to fruition a number of innovative and collaborative initiatives
that empower our members to engage more meaningfully in the AESS community.
Over the last two years, Walt Downing (Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, TX, USA) placed emphasis on
action and introduced a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Relevant and Timed) approach to AESS strategic planning, which
was a real catalyst for change and a motivation to get things done.
Our work has been based on three overarching goals: 1) attracting and engaging younger members as the future of our
Society; 2) better serving the needs of Industry where the majority of our members work; and 3) reaching out to geographic
regions and diversity groups where the AESS membership is underrepresented.
The Society has improved its financial position over the past two years and our membership in 2019 has increased from
previous years. What follows is an overview of the work of the AESS in 2018-2019, the changes that have taken place and
an outline of new products and services that the AESS now offers.

Awards Chair
Each year IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB)
Awards recognize and honor individuals, sections, and
societies for major contributions in developing and delivering educational products and services to IEEE members,
professionals, educators, and students. In 2019, the AESS
received the IEEE EAB Society/Council Professional
Development Award for the first time. The AESS was presented with the award at the EAB Awards Ceremony on
Friday, November 22, 2019, in Boston. President-Elect
Walt Downing was in attendance to receive the award. I
congratulate the entire Society for receiving this prestigious award. I consider it one of the "big wins" for 2019!
The citation reads, "For offering inspiring and comprehensive educational programs and innovative professional
development opportunities to the IEEE community."
