Special Issue on

Systems and Solu ons for Arc c Challenges
The Arc c region has received increased a en on as changes in the area's climate enable a much more robust human footprint there than in the recent past. Implica ons of increased human presence in the Arc c
are wide-ranging, aﬀec ng a broad spectrum of endeavors, and many of these implica ons represent calls
for technologies and systems that help facilitate this inevitable increase.
Because of the inhospitable, unique and extremely challenging condi ons of the Arc c
region, opera ng there safely requires unique solu ons. With no infrastructure, no land
mass, and an austere climate, the region brings unique challenges that few people have
experienced to-date. Naviga on and safety in the mari me and aerospace environments
of the Arc c could benefit from innova ve technological systems and solu ons, and this
special edi on of Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine will focus on technologies,
systems and processes that can support the increasing human presence in the region.
Understanding the implica ons of climate change on the Arc c region, AESS, in partnership with the U. S.
Navy's Arc c Submarine Laboratory, intends to compile a Special Issue of the AESS Magazine that will cover
the technical solu ons and systems that can be applied to increased human presence in the region. This
Special Issue will present the view point of experts in the relevant domains to illustrate the current stateof-research and to discuss the challenges that must be addressed to support further advances in industryfocused research and innova on.

safety, voyage planning, etc.
An understanding of past and current Arc c region opera ons: who goes there and why?
Survival and rescue in the Arc c environment.
Leveraging exis ng systems and strategies for applica ons in the Arc c environment.
