HE idea of creating a special issue on noise radar in this
magazine was born in 2019 in Paris during the final meeting
of the NATO Research Task Group SET-225 in which the
three of us were involved. The report to this group, on "Spatial and
Waveform Diverse Noise Radar" monitored other laboratories active
in noise radar. Besides the very close and successful collaboration
between seven different countries involved in the NATO group,
much interesting progress in the field of noise radar has recently
been made. We concluded that noise radar has evolved from a former niche research field to a serious technology with potential interest to a general audience. Consequently, with the gratefully
acknowledged support of the editor, Peter Willet, we initiated a call
for papers for a special issue on noise radar in IEEE Aerospace &
Electronics Systems Magazine. In the end, we received so many contributions that these form a two-part special issue on noise radar,
and we now invite you to read the second one.
After having introduced, reviewed, and detailed the technological
advances of noise radar in the first part, published in September 2020,
Part 2 focuses on noise radar waveform design and on the usage of noise
radar technology as an enabler for spectral sharing amongst multiple
radio frequency services, including radar. These aspects are illuminated
by interesting contributions from theoretical as well as from practical
perspectives.
"Noise vs. Deterministic Waveform 3 Radar-Possibilities and
Limitations" by M. Malanowski et al. provides a review and
some new results which emphasize the advantages of noise radar
against deterministic waveforms in terms of radar performance
and robustness against electronic warfare intercept receivers.

"Principles and Applications of Random FM Radar Waveform Design" by S. D. Blunt et al. presents a review of radar
based on random frequency modulations and an approach to waveform diversity that includes the ability to operate
high-power noise radar applications and support spectral sharing with other signals.
"Pseudo-Noise Waveform Design for Spectrum Sharing Systems" by K. Kulpa et al. addresses the "spectrum sharing"
problem from a waveform-design perspective including sidelobe control and multitransmitter operations, by exploring
a technique to balance the need to tailor the range sidelobes and the need to avoid the frequencies used by the other signals in the band.
"Incoherent Imaging at Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Frequencies Using Noise Transmitters" by J. A.
Nanzer and J. Papapolymerous presents an approach of an active microwave imaging application that uses noise
illumination combined with spatial frequency domain sampling to achieve fast imaging with simple, nonscanning, hardware.
