The proposed error detection method can be used on
any ARINC 429 interface, although it is specially developed
for catastrophic failure conditions that must be
extremely improbable, and typically applicable for architectures
requiring more than one data source (dissimilarity).
The insertion of CRC-5 as part of the payload for
additional integrity has the potential to reduce a common
2.310-06 ARINC 429 interface failure rate (default value
for the equipment used on the tests) to 4.610-08. Hence,
a single bus complying with a major failure can then comply
with a hazardous failure condition. In addition, a unit
requiring even higher integrity data can receive ARINC
429 interfaces from dual sources, one implementing CRC5
and the other the Hamming Code, therefore the dissimilar
data coding system is capable to sustain an improved
number of hardware upset events like high-intensity radiated
field or single event upset.
It is important to highlight the significance ofthe increase
ofindividual data integrity, since the safety objectives are relative
to the system as a whole. A single weakness point can
have a significant impact on a function, or even impact several
functions. Regarding the topic of this work, independently
of how reliable equipment and software are, if the
interfaces are unreliable the systemwill be unreliable.
To better illustrate potential candidates to receive the proposed
error detection method, a typical triple source system
