his issue of the IEEE AEROSPACE AND ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS MAGAZINE (AESM) includes four papers on deep-space exploration with CubeSats and enabling technology. This AESM issue constitutes Part 2 of the special issue series on CubeSats
in deep space, especially the CubeSats of NASA's Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), recently renamed as the Artemis 1
mission. Part 1 occupies the April 2019 issue of AESM. The four papers in the present issue are introduced in the following.
1. "Water Electrolysis Propulsion as a Case Study in Resource-Based Spacecraft Architecture" considers the implications
of in-situ resource availability on the design of space systems, with the use of water for multiple purposes on the
Cislunar Explorers, a CubeSat pair of the Artemis 1 mission, as a case study. For the Cislunar Explorers, water has the
following uses: electrolysis propulsion, attitude stabilization, the sinking of waste heat, and radiation shielding.
2. "Nano Moon Semi-Hard Lander: OMOTENASHI" introduces the CubeSat OMOTENASHI, which will travel to the
moon as part of the Artemis 1 mission. This CubeSat will demonstrate the potential of nano landers, becoming the
smallest probe ever to land on the Moon. Because of the mass and size limitations, OMOTENASHI will execute a
semi-hard, rather than a soft, landing on the lunar surface.
3. "The Iris Deep-Space Transponder for the SLS EM-1 Secondary Payloads" discusses the Iris transponder, designed
by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and baselined by seven Artemis 1 CubeSats (Lunar Flashlight, Near-Earth
Asteroid Scout, BioSentinel, Lunar IceCube, CubeSat for Solar Particles, Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper, and
ArgoMoon). Iris is a 0.5 U, low-power, software-defined radio that is compatible with the Deep Space Network.
The hardware, firmware, and software implementation is discussed in this paper.
4. "Regenerative Ranging for JPL Software-Defined Radios" describes an implemenation of regenerative ranging in
JPL's Iris transponder. The regeneration of the ranging signal, which arrives at the transponder immersed in noise,
involves the tracking of the range clock and the acquisition of a pseudo-random noise code. This regeneration of the
ranging signal permits a range measurement that uses link power more efficiently.
