Ann Burgmeyer
For pioneering work in electronic publishing and data
archiving contributing to IEEE's leadership in publishing,
and for support of volunteers and staff for over 35 years

Manager, Software Development, IEEE Publications, Mehul Trivedi
was named the 2009 Joyce E. Farrell IEEE Staff Award recipient.
He is recognized for a decade of outstanding contributions to
IEEE. Mehul is well known for his advanced professional skills and
knowledge, management style, work ethic, and demeanor.

In 1968, Ann Burgmeyer joined IEEE as an Editorial Assistant.
Within a year and a half, she was promoted to Senior Editor of
a Transactions division. She and two colleagues created the
IEEE Style Manual, still in use today. Main contributions
included the format and style of equations and design and
standardization of several mathematical characters and
formulae. She remained in journals for 25 years. Ann initiated
the IEEE Newsletter Department, several IEEE magazines, and
started the Conference Publishing division and produced the
first fully electronic technical manuscripts. She published the
first SGML standards for coding manuscripts and launched the
IEEE Journal on Magnetics in Japan, arranging for the translation and review of Japanese technical manuscripts into English.
She also produced the first IEEE CD-ROM of an IEEE conference proceeding.

Endorsements for Mehul's nomination for the award recognized how he consistently exhibits the characteristics of the
IEEE Enabling Culture Principles. Indeed, Mehul's embodiment
of the principle concerning respect for others was a recurring
theme mentioned by nearly all of his endorsers. One said,
"Mehul respects everyone regardless of position. He is always
patient in explaining complex technical issues in a way that is
understandable to all without making anyone feel inferior."
Another endorser noticed that Mehul takes his role as manager
very seriously, "understanding that his actions towards his
team affect both their personal and professional lives."
Established in 1996, the Joyce E. Farrell IEEE Staff Award is
presented annually for exemplary professional performance and
consistent practice of the IEEE Enabling Staff Culture. Recipients
receive a certificate, engraved Waterford crystal bowl, honorarium and have their name and photograph added to the Farrell
Award plaque on display at the IEEE Operations Center.

Ann established the first IEEE web-based system to collect
electronic manuscripts directly from authors. This evolved into
the creation of a fully automated manuscript conversion system
that later became PDF eXpress®. She also developed a fully
electronic method to produce IEEE conference proceedings in
print and CD-ROM form (Conference eXpress®). This led to her
development of a web-based conference proceeding, eliminating the need for any manufactured media. She published
the first online conference proceedings accessible to conference attendees during the conference. Ann developed an
electronic peer-review system for conference papers.

Ann was a charter member of the Society for Scholarly
Publishing and a member of the Society for Technical
Communications. She received the Outstanding Chapter
Achievement Award from the STC for her leadership as Chair
of the New York Chapter. The IEEE Information Theory Society
and the IEEE Industry Applications Society both gave her
awards for work on their transactions.
