Telle Whitney
For leadership in supporting and promoting women in technology, and for building
a highly impactful global organization
dedicated to this purpose

For sustained innovation and pioneering research in audio
technology leading to affordable, high-performance products

During her accomplished career in the semiconductor industry,
Telle Whitney developed a critical understanding of the challenges women face in technology sectors and used her experiences to
become a pioneer for the promotion of women technologists. As
president and chief executive officer of the Anita Borg Institute
for Women (now known as AnitaB.org) from 2002 until 2017,
Whitney shaped and executed the Institute's mission of increasing the number of women technologists in the global workforce.
Through Whitney's vision, hard work, and intense commitment,
AnitaB has identified issues, pushed both women and men to
address the challenges, and inspired hundreds of thousands of
women at all stages in their careers to persist and succeed. She
guided the organization from a new and struggling nonprofit to
one with a global reach and brand that has become an established
force supporting women in technology. She led the development
of a wide variety of programs aimed at recruiting, retaining, and
advancing women. She cofounded, with computer scientist Anita
Borg, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
Conference in 1994, which has grown exponentially from 500
attendees in 1994 to over 18,000 in 2017 and has become the
premier global event for promoting and creating opportunities in
technology for women. To expand the conference's influence, the
Grace Hopper Celebration India was launched in 2011 and had
over 2,900 attendees in 2016. She has led the creation of the Systers network to build local communities of women technologists
and their allies, cofounded the National Center for Women and
Information Technology, and cofounded the BRAID (Building
Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity) project. BRAID works
with computer science departments across the United States to
help increase the participation of women and people of color in
their undergraduate majors.
Recipient of the Association for Computing Machinery's Distinguished Service Award (2009) and named one of Fast Company's Most Influential Women in Technology (2011),Whitney is
Chief Executive Officer Emeritus, consultant, and board member
with the Anita Borg Institute, Palo Alto, CA, USA.

Driven by its founding principles of investing in long-term research
to develop new technologies with real customer benefits, Bose Corporation has changed the way people listen to music at home, on
the go, in the car, and in public spaces. Bose was founded by Amar
G. Bose in 1964, who was then a professor of electrical engineering
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The numerous innovative products developed by Bose are based on multidisciplinary
research programs that are both theoretical and experimental in
nature, featuring physical acoustics, psychoacoustics, materials science, transducer design, systems analysis, biometrics, measurement
tools, analog and digital signal processing, power processing, and the
development of special-purpose quality and manufacturing equipment to achieve exceptional levels of precision and quality. Bose
has provided full-range, lifelike sound from compact systems with
a number of iconic products, including its 901 Direct/Reflecting
Speaker, Acoustimass systems, Bose Wave systems, and SoundLink
Bluetooth speakers. These products feature Bose-pioneered technologies that provided a breakthrough in the realism of reproduced
music at a fraction of the enclosure size of conventional speakers.
Bose's pioneering noise-canceling headphones combine closedloop, noise-cancelling technology with comfortable noise-isolating
earcup and eartip designs for unprecedented levels of noise reduction. Bose also transformed audio systems in automobiles with technology and sound quality that rivaled the quality of premium home
systems. Bose used their patented digital switch-mode amplifiers
because their tiny size and very high efficiency meant they could be
colocated within speaker enclosures elaborately shaped to squeeze
into unused door cavities. Newer Bose technologies in automobiles
include microphones and engine sensors that continuously monitor
road and engine noise and compensate the sound system equalization to maintain the highest possible sound quality. And in the field
of architectural acoustics, 10 years of Bose research led to the Auditioner tool, a widely used computer program and binaural playback
system for accurately simulating the sound of an unbuilt room.
Located in Framingham, MA, USA, Bose is currently under
the direction of Philip Hess, who serves as president and chief
executive officer.

Scope: For those who have rendered meritorious service to
humanity in the IEEE's designated fields of interest and who are
not members of the IEEE.

Scope: For an outstanding innovation by an organization in an
IEEE field of interest.
