LETTER FROM THE IEEE PRESIDENT AND AWARDS BOARD CHAIR

Dear IEEE Members, Honorees, Colleagues, and Friends:
Welcome to the 2019 IEEE Honors Ceremony!
This is the third year for the IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges (VIC) Summit and Honors Ceremony. It is an exciting
collaboration that embodies what engineering is all about-coming together to discuss, explore, and uncover what is imminent,
what is possible, and what these emerging technologies mean for our future, while celebrating the accomplishments and
contributions of those who have harnessed the unmatched power of technology to improve people's lives throughout the world.
We are thrilled to host such a diverse collection of speakers and award recipients from around the world and across the broad
spectrum of engineering disciplines to provide the opportunity to experience the multitude of leading-edge viewpoints on technology
and innovation. IEEE is at its best when we bring together the totality of our offerings with the rich diversity of our global community
of professionals from academia, government, and industry to solve the problems facing humanity. Like when a pebble hits the water,
the contributions from the women and men we recognize tonight have created waves in the pool of innovation that have far-reaching
impact. Their work invented unique and novel technologies, created entirely new disciplines, and inspired others to develop the next
state-of-the-art technology in service of humanity.
We are also presenting a very special IEEE President's Award. This recognition is given to an individual whose career has exhibited
distinguished leadership and contributions to the public. We are honoring Katherine Johnson, a mathematician whose calculations
of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. manned spaceflights. We
also celebrate Katherine's lifelong support and encouragement of students to pursue careers in science and technology.
On behalf of the IEEE's Board of Directors, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our generous awards sponsors and to all
of the nominators, endorsers, volunteers, and professional staff for their dedication to making our Awards Program such a success.
We would also like to acknowledge all of this year's nominees-the exceptional array of educators, engineers, scientists, innovators,
