Ingrid Verbauwhede
For pioneering contributions to energyeffi
cient and high-performance secure
integrated circuits and systems
Hardware security is essential in modern electronics and a
foundation for a secure and private world. Ingrid Verbauwhede
demonstrated that true security in computing systems requires
hardware considerations and hardware solutions. She pioneered
efficient realizations of many generations of cryptographic algorithms,
including DES, AES, ECC, now used in virtually all
electronic devices and communications. Hardware security also
includes providing other roots of trust for secure systems, such as
true random number generators or secure storage for keys. She
pioneered circuit level techniques to protect against side-channel
attacks. Verbauwhede now focuses on post-quantum and homomorphic
encryption, which provide security even when quantum
computers are used in cryptanalysis.
Verbauwhede is an IEEE and IACR fellow, and professor at the
KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.

Roel Baets
For pioneering research in integrated
photonics, including silicon,
silicon-nitride, III-V devices, and their
heterogeneous integration
Roel Baets has made profound contributions to the field of silicon
photonics. He identified the significance of silicon photonics as an
emerging technology early on, then made the critical connection
to industry and large-scale manufacturing through his association
with IMEC, demonstrating the first silicon photonic circuits on
the basis of CMOS technology in 2005. This was a major leap
in the commercial viability and industrial relevance of silicon
photonics. Silicon photonics is now experiencing great commercial
success. A growing number of semiconductor foundries
today offer silicon photonics as a standard process and many
established and new companies are developing and selling commercial
products based on the technologies and device concepts
advanced by Baets.
Baets is an IEEE Fellow and a senior full professor at Ghent
University-IMEC, Ghent, Belgium.

Omkaram Nalamasu
For leadership in research and
development of semiconductor materials,
processes, and equipment
Omkaram Nalamasu's technical leadership and scholarship have
significantly advanced engineering technologies that are now part
of our everyday lives. One example is his technical and managerial
leadership that has led to the development of Thin Film
Encapsulation technology for the OLED display industry. Dr.
Nalamasu also led the development of a disruptive OLED front
plane technology that has significantly higher efficiency and lower
cost. Another contribution is the development of a technology
solution that has improved LED device yield and performance at
lower cost. The solution is now used at every major LED manufacturer
for advanced solid-state lighting for general illumination.

Kathleen Mckeown
For pushing the boundaries of natural
language processing for social media
analysis, news summarization, crisis
informatics, and creating a digital
library for patient care
Kathleen McKeown has developed natural language processing
techniques that promote social good. She has created methods that
summarize and analyze news reports on past disasters to provide
updates on current disasters as they unfold. Her work in so cial
media uses data science to understand the personal narratives of
those who have experienced a disaster and employs sentiment
detection to identify where people are still suffering. Earlier in
her career, she developed a system for the personalized search and
summarization of medical literature to build a digital library for
patient care that presents in lay terms information that is helpful
to patients and their families.
McKeown is the Henry and Gertrude Rothschild Professor of
Computer Science, Department of Computer Science, Columbia
