Commanding the James Webb Space Telescope: OSS and Event-Driven Operations
V. Concluding Remarks
JWST's event-driven commanding architecture is a
significant leap in efficiency gain for space telescope
missions. Having a collection of onboard scripts to execute
activities routinely uplinked by the ground allows for
seamless commanding of the Observatory and quick
and appropriate responsiveness to anomalies. Complex
operations are made possible or significantly easier to
execute under this paradigm, rendering sophisticated
science activities easier to improve and support as needed.
With JWST's success under this operations model, the
Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) will also adopt
event-driven operations and, in turn, lead to a new era of
operations for space-based observatories.

Kyle Elliott is a senior software
engineer at the Space Telescope Science
Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland,
and has worked on the JWST mission
as a member of the OSS for over five
years - he currently specializes in FGS
and Spacecraft Bus commanding. He
has also provided development support
for the Roman Space Telescope science operations. He holds
an M.S. in space systems engineering from Johns Hopkins
University and B.S. degrees in physics and astronomy from
the University of Maryland.
