in 1971, Stan Williams and his colleagues at HP have reported in Nature their work on fabrication of memristors [6]. Their invention of nanoscale solid-state memristors involved a resistance-switching material layer
sandwiched between two metal wires. With support of

NSF and HP, I organized a symposium on memristors
and memristive systems on the Berkeley campus which
was well attended by many researchers from industry
and academia [7]. Since then there have been a variety
of different materials introduced for fabrication of memristors [8]. The Memristors and Memristive Systems
Symposium has continued as shown in Fig. 2 taken at its
second meeting.
Some intriguing properties of memristors include
their stateful logic property [9], [10] and similarity to
synapse [11] which can be potentially applied to neuromorphic computing. Among many other interesting
research subjects, Leon has held much interest in this
area and Fig. 3 shows his visit to the Brain Mind Institute
of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in
2011. Leon's other significant interest was in bifurcation
and chaos theory and his circuit, a paradigm for chaos.
An extensive collection of relevant papers are edited by
Rabinder N. Madan in a book, Chua's Circuit: A Paradigm
for Chaos published by World Scientific Publishing Co.
in 1993 [12]. It shows Chua's circuit (Fig. 4(a)) and a gallery of nearly 50 attractors from the Chua's oscillator in
Fig. 4(b) composed of 1-2 linear resistors, two linear capacitors, one linear inductor and one nonlinear resistor
as shown in Fig. 4(c), named Chua's diode.
Leon's contributions in chaos have been recognized
along with Henri Poincare, Edward Lorenz, and Andrey
Kolmogorov in the who's who in chaos [13]. What I have
described is only a small portion of Leon's contributions
over several decades which I am familiar with.
I have been immensely benefitted professionally and
as a person from being one of his earlier graduate students. Since my graduation in 1975 our teacher-student
relationship has continued unceasingly. One of cherished
valuables is a note Leon presented to me when he visited the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as its
distinguished alumnus. At that time he presented a copy
of his book coauthored with Charles A. Desoer and Ernest
