Abstract
In this paper, we present an analysis of some selected fingerprints of Chua's memristors. First, the memristor is presented not as a concrete nanodevice but, more generally,
as a manifestation of permanent natural principle. Next,
an overview of the current classification of memristors
is given in the light of various mechanisms of the
memristance adjustment by internal state and by
terminal variables. It is shown that only the ideal
and ideal generic memristors have their stamps
in Chua's table of fundamental elements and in
the equivalent storeyed structure, both of them being
based on the idea of predictive modeling. a brief overview
on the memristor fingerprints is presented. the homothety fingerprint is discussed in detail, and all existing elements complying with this fingerprint are identified. Finally, it is argued that the
most natural fingerprint of the original memristors introduced by
L. Chua in 1971 should be sought in the charge-flux coordinates
of their constitutive relations.

e were made acquainted with the term "memristor" in the 1980s, when we studied Electrical
Engineering at the Brno Technical University in
former Czechoslovakia. In spite of the fact that the then
totalitarian regime in the Eastern block did not support
anything coming from the West, the students were familiar with the name of L. Chua, in particular thanks to two
distinguished professors at the largest technical universi-

ties in Brno and Prague, who maintained close personal
and professional contacts with L. Chua. Since the end of
the 1960s, the Chua textbook [1] has become a basic material for studying the circuit theory at the two largest faculties of Electrical Engineering in the country.
Information about Chua's memristor quickly made
its way through the iron curtain just after its introduction in 1971 in the today classical paper [2]. In the 1970s
and 1980s, in spite of the low worldwide response to L.
Chua's works on memristors and other unconventional
circuit elements, they were intensively studied in Eastern Europe. In the Brno University of Technology archives, MSc theses from the 1970s can be found, dealing
with the construction of analogue emulators of memristors. The history is repeated four decades later: The
emulators of memristors are again constructed, even
if with up-to-date integrated components, but with the
use of identical ideas as before, the most useful of them
being the mutators, again of L. Chua's make.
