his special issue is dedicated to Prof. Leon O.
Chua to honor his pioneering work in nonlinear
circuit theory, chaos, cellular neural networks,
and memristors. As a leading researcher he was not only
shaping the work of many generations of scientists by
his excellent contributions leading to new technologies
but also inspired his students by exceptional lectures.
The significance and impact of his scientific work is
reflected by the outstanding high number of awards and
honors he received over the course of his career including the prestigious awards:
■ The IEEE Browder J. Thompson Memorial Prize
Award (1967),
■ The IEEE Guillemin- Cauer Award (1972, 1985,
1989),
■ The IEEE W. R. G. Baker Prize Award (1973),

Especially, he was awarded a TUM Distinguished
Affiliated Professor (Technical University of Munich,

He owns seven USA patents and is an IEEE Life Fellow
since 1974. Prof. Chua was elected as a foreign member
of the European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europea) in 1997 as well as a foreign member of the Hungarian Academy of Science in 2006.
Prof. Chua was born on June 28, 1936, in the Philippines. He attended the Mapúa Institute of Technology
receiving his BSEE degree in 1959. Afterwards he moved
to the United States where he obtained the MSEE (1961)
and the PhD (1964) degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois at
Champaign-Urbana, respectively. He became an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University in 1964 and was promoted to Associate Professor
in 1967. He joined the University of California at Berkeley
in 1970 and has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences until he retired recently.
This special issue is a collection of research articles of some of his closed collaborators and long-term
friends giving contributions to his fields of expertise.
