Abstract
Cellular neural/nonlinear networks were invented almost 30 years
ago. the CNN research led to high performance computational
architectures, neuromorphic modells of the visual and auditory
pathways, stability results for arrays of coupled dynamic processors, and for practical image processing results. the main stages
of the research and the results are summarized in this paper.
I. Introduction
ellular Neural/Nonlinear Networks (CNN) were
proposed by Leon Chua and Liu Yang [1] in 1988.
CNN was an analog computer array architecture
offering 2-3 orders of magnitude speed advantage over
its digital counterparts. In its original form, the CNN was
a few layers of two dimensional neural networks with spatially invariant local interconnection pattern. This made
it very similar to some neural systems in the visual pathway and paved the way to its efficient VLSI implementation. In the beginning of the 1990s, already fifty people
were dealing with CNN research in different international
laboratories in Europe in the US and in Asia. This number
tripled by the end of the decade, and by now, almost ten
thousand papers were published in this topic.

From application point of view, the critical step was
the invention of the CNN Universal Machine (CNN-UM)
which was proposed by Tamas Roska and Leon Chua in
1993 [2]. This changed the previously rigid architecture
to a powerful array processing re-programmable computer. Its main application area was early image processing, where these kinds of local pixel manipulations are
needed, however the then digital technology could not
provide the necessary amount of computational power. It
was also a theoretical breakthrough, because it showed
the way, how to convert a neural network to a multi-thousand core microprocessor. Due to these results CNN chip
development projects were started in more than fifteen
different laboratories all over the world. Some successors of these chips are already in the industrial practice
[3]. Moreover, the nowadays widely used Convolutional
Neural Networks (called CNN also) are the simplified but
large scale versions of the digital implementation of the
multi-layer Cellular Neural Networks. As it will be shown
in this overview paper the research is still continuous.
The most important forum of this research community
is the bi-annual International Workshop on Cellular Nanoscale Networks and their Applications (CNNA) conference. This overview paper starts with the definition of
the CNN and CNN-UM (Section II), then the biological
