commemorate the achievements of Popov (see Figure 3).
The milestones program honors significant technical
achievements in all areas associated with IEEE. It is a
program of the IEEE History Committee, administered
through the IEEE History Center. Milestones recognize
the technological innovation and excellence for the
benefit of humanity found in unique products, services,
seminal papers and patents.
In 2007, the St. Petersburg Government established
the Popov Medal (Figure 4) for contributions to Electronics
and Electrical Engineering.

in Berlin in 1903, as a joint venture of Siemens & Halske
and the Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG). Between
1899 and 1904 Telefunken sold some of the first
wireless stations to the Russian Navy, but the company
was too small to provide the volume Russia needed.
In 1901 Popov was appointed a Full Professor at the
St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering Institute, and Chair
of the Physics Department. In 1905 Popov was the first
elected Director of St. Petersburg Electrical Engineering
Institute. Unfortunately, this position did not give
him the opportunity to continue carrying out significant
research. In the beginning of January 1906 at the
age of 46 Popov died of a stroke. In 2005, IEEE installed
a memorial plaque in the building of Saint Petersburg
Eletrotechnial University (former Electrical Engineering
Institute) under the IEEE Milestones Program to

Alexander S. Korotkov is a Professor of the Integrated
Electronics Department, Peter the Great St. Petersburg
Polytechnic University, St. Petersburg, Russia. He
is the Chair of the St. Petersburg Chapter of the IEEE Circuits
& Systems Society and a member of the IEEE CASCOM
Technical Committee. He was awarded the Popov
Medal in 2020.
