CAS News From Romania
T
he first edition of the International
Symposium on Signals,
Circuits and Systems, initially
called Signals, Circuits and Systems,
was organized in Ias‚i, Romania, by
the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications
and Information Technology
of the " Gheorghe Asachi "
Technical University of Ias‚i in November
1993 as a joint event of the IEEE
Romania CAS Chapter and the abovementioned
faculty. In a way, it is fair
to say that the father of the symposium
was Professor Florin Constantinescu
from " Politehnica " University
of Bucharest, the first chairman of
the CAS Chapter in Romania. He told
me that the newly born CAS Chapter
is expected to organize certain
specific activities-this was the moment
when I promised to organize a
symposium on CAS subjects in Ias‚i
not only as a technical activity but also as an attempt
to show our wishes to communicate, strengthen links
with researchers outside Romania and in addition to
show the beauty of Eastern region of this country. Fortunately,
the idea was immediately accepted and supported
by the Dean of our faculty at that time. As the
first edition of the symposium was a success, we decided
to continue organizing it every two years. We have
been encouraged by many CAS Society presidents and
representatives, among whom I will mention only Professor
Tony Davies whose advice and support were instrumental
for the organization of the first editions of
the symposium.
Now, let me point out another event that significantly
influenced the growth of the symposium. I met
Professor Sanjit Mitra for the first time at ECCTD 2001
held at Espoo, Finland where, during a coffee break I

approached him and I invited him to present a plenary
lecture at
the 2003 symposium. He accepted
and, from 2003 to 2017, he attended all eight editions
