Special attention should be paid to Dr. Yen-Kuang
Intel (CASS DL, IEEE Fellow) June 2017 visit
to St. Petersburg, when he conducted a lecture titled
" System Challenges and Opportunities of Internet of
Things " (see Fig. 15). The total number of attendees
was about 15 persons. The lecturer introduced the concept
of smart and secure organization of IoT systems
and demonstrated new results on the topic. Fruitful
discussions which were held after the lecture resulted
in formulating possible practical tasks for further
research in the area of thermoelectricity and autonomous
energy sources.
The results of the research in thermoelectricity have
been reported by members of CASS Chapter, St. Petersburg
in seven IEEE sponsored Conferences [15], [18]-
[20], [22], [24], [25]. The paper presenters considered
theoretical basics and results of design, simulation and
fabrication of thermoelectric devices including different
types of TEGs based on film and MEMS technologies.
The organizers of the IEEE ISSCS in Iasi, Romania are in
the photo of Fig. 16.

The main challenge of thermoelectricity theory and
practice is how to increase the TEG effectiveness. The
solution of the problem lies in two trends. The first one
is the synthesis of advanced semiconductor materials,
for an example, superlattices, materials with quantum
dots and so on [26]. The second trend is an optimal TEG
and thermoelement design, which includes the following
techniques:
■ unconventional design of TEG thermocouples, for
an example, like uni-leg, Y-type and so on;
