CAS in the World
IEEE CAS Activities In Central America And Mexico
1. Central America
T
he countries of Central America are: Guatemala,
Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica and Panamá. All countries of Central America,
except Belize, have IEEE Sections which belong to
the IEEE Region 9: Latin America. The IEEE Sections of
Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Salvador were founded in
August 1986. The IEEE Section of Honduras was founded
in August 1987, the IEEE Section of Panama was founded
in September 1972, and finally, the IEEE Section of
Nicaragua was founded in January 1995.
However, only IEEE Section Costa Rica has a Circuits
and System (CAS) chapter. This chapter regularly organizes
CAS Seasonal School on Circuits and Systems.
However, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the
School was not organized.
CONCAPAN (CONvention Central America y PANamá)
is the most relevant event in Central America. It is
a trade show annually held in Panamá City, usually in the
month of November. CONCAPAN 2021 was scheduled to
be held in Hotel Sheraton Grand Panamá, Panamá City in
November 2021 showing the companies news of Panamá
and internationals related to sectors Engineering, Electrical
engineering, Industrial engineering. The Circuits
and Systems Chapter of Costa Rica organizes a Conference
Track for CONCAPAN.
Because of the Covid pandemic situation in the
Central American region and after consultation with
the entire IEEE Central American and Panamá Council
(CAPANA), it has been decided that the CONCAPAN
event will be postponed and will be held on November
9-12, 2022 in Panamá City, Panamá.
Additionally, as a part of a Region 9, all IEEE Sections
of Central America are active participants in the most
important CAS event of Latin America, LASCAS (Latin
America Symposium on Circuits and System). This year
LASCAS 21 was held online and organized by the IEEE
Section of Peru.
2. Mexico
There are nine IEEE Sections in México: Aguascalientes
(founded in January 1994), Centro Occident de México
(founded in November 1993), Guadalajara (founded in
August 1990), Guanajuato (founded in November 1994),
Monterrey (founded in April 1975), Morelos (founded
in February 1989), Puebla (founded in November 2003),
Queretaro (founded in April 2001) and Veracruz (Founded
in June 2005).
There are 3 IEEE CAS Chapters in México: Guadalajara,
Puebla and Mexico.
A. IEEE SP/CAS Society Joint Chapter Guadalajara
This joint chapter regularly organizes Distinguished
Lecturer Series. Last year there were two lectures in
this series:
■ Dr. Achin Bhowmik of Starkey and Stanford University,
presented the lecture: " Transforming
Hearing Aids into Multifunctional Health and
Communication Devices with Embedded Sensors
and Artificial Intelligence " in April 2021.
■ Professor Muriel Medard of MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts,
presented the lecture: " It's Not a Code,
It's Decoder " in March 2021.

B. IEEE CAS Society Chapter Puebla
This chapter regularly organizes seasonal CAS schools.
However, this year, due to the pandemic situation, no
school was organized. The only organized event held
was IEEE MHTC 2021 (Mexican Humanitarian Technology
Conference) in April 21-23 at Puebla, México. IEEE
MHTC is a cross-disciplinary conference for the presentation,
discussion, and the development of technological
solutions for social challenges. It was organized in
collaborations of different IEEE Puebla chapters, including
CAS chapter. The conference tracks are: Emerging
technologies for humanitarian applications includes:
ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication, Internet
of Things, wireless sensor networks, 3D printing,
big data, cloud computing, circuits and systems.
