roles brilliantly: teacher, educator, researcher, administrator,
department head. How did you balance these
roles? What is your definition of success? And what are
your suggestions or advice that you want to give to the
younger generation of researchers?
Answer 6: I loved most aspects of my work. That
made it easy to perform well. I think success is measured
by both internal and external recognition. The internal
one is the satisfaction and fun which you enjoy while doing
your work. My external recognition was provided by
the success of my students, both the ones in my classes
and my thesis advisees. Also, IEEE provided numerous
forms of recognition, such as best paper awards, as well
as teaching and research awards.
Concerning my advice to young researchers in circuit
design and theory: you have a very exciting environment
in which to spread your wings. When I started my research
activities, there was ONE American professional
journal in the area of circuits, the IRE Transactions on Circuit
Theory. It was published once every three months. If
you read that, and the Bell System Technical Journal (and
maybe a few European journals) you knew everything
that was going on in your field. The number of job opportunities
for designers in the circuits area was also very
limited. Now, the circuit design area has become a crucial
one in electronics, the sciences and in communications.
Job opportunities are exploding; the field has split into
dozens of subspecialties; the number of IEEE journals on
circuits and systems is measured in the dozens, as is the
number of conferences in the area. Thus, you have many
opportunities and challenges. You must be very motivated
to keep up with both, but the rewards are huge!
Question 7: What do you anticipate for the future of analog
circuit design at highly scaled technology nodes and
in new applications such as 5G, AI computing, etc.?
Answer 7: When we read daily that the largest players
in semiconductor technology are starting new multibillion
fabrication facilities and technology-oriented research
projects, it is clear that the race to keep Moore's
law alive will continue for the foreseeable future. Many
new applications (IoT, AI, 6G, biomedical technology)
will likely require improved and novel analog circuitry
specific to these areas, and this will keep research in
our field challenging and exciting. These new applications
will also create new roles for analog circuit designers
in companies like NVIDIA and Apple, which
previously were looking mostly for digital and systems
engineers. They need analog circuit designers to help
them develop new systems for such applications.
