Section C: Strengths of Indian Institutions
Indian academic and research labs have a vast pool of
faculty and researchers engaged in various aspects of
Circuits and Systems including Signal and Image Processing
as listed in Section A. Many of them are connected
to emerging applications in speech processing, image
processing, video processing, communication etc. Additionally,
in India a considerable amount of work is also
being devoted towards core signal processing research.

tems
being a vast area gives rise to some critical lacunae
that need to be bridged for the overall benefit of
the research community. Joint research collaborations,
especially between academia/research lab and industries,
i.e., lab-to-market pathway need to be better managed.
More efforts should be given in acquiring datasets
meant for applying signal processing research for
societal benefits, and sharing them with the research
community to foster the growth of benchmarking studies.
It is also true like elsewhere, applied researches
are getting more supports from funding agencies, and
researches on theory and concepts get neglected by
this process. The process of national and international
collaboration needs to be strengthened. Moreover, not
exploring emerging research on a war footing basis is
also one of the weaknesses affecting this domain from
an Indian perspective.
Opportunities Awaiting Young Researchers: Bridging
the weaknesses listed would offer opportunities that
the young researchers could explore. It involves various
aspects such as, working on building research cooperations
nationally and internationally, having student
exchange programs, building research forums, building
datasets and making them publicly available, supporting
reproducible research via GitHub, including multidisciplinary
approaches for problem-solving, etc. Being proactive
in recognizing emerging areas like exploring the role
of signal processing in the machine and deep learning
era from the design and architecture point of view would
bridge the gap between classical signal processing and
the most recent machine/deep learning. Although signal
processing has revolutionized medical imaging and its
analysis, some areas like human psyche and its behavior
from the cognition point of view are areas where signal
processing concepts could play an active role and need
further attention.
