2023: The Golden Age of Semiconductors
T
he development of semiconductor circuits and
systems has garnered unprecedented attention
from governments worldwide as a result of reforms
in the global semiconductor manufacturing and supply
chain. This has been driven by concerns over the security
of the supply chain, which has led to the introduction
of various national initiatives, such as the United States'
CHIPS Act, aimed at promoting local manufacturing and
R&D. The demand for semiconductors and its impact on
related industries has resulted in over $160 billion in capital
expenditures in 2022. We are in the golden age of semiconductors.
On the other hand, the global semiconductor
market is expected to experience a 4% decline in 2023,
reaching a total of about $550 billion, marking the first annual
contraction since 2019. The decrease in growth of the
global semiconductor market is seen as a potential harbinger
of broader economic troubles, leading to recent and
planned job cuts at major companies within the industry.
Despite the temporary downturn of the market, the
investment had had a positive impact on the field: Researchers
in both industrial and academic settings have
received ample funding for their work; the promising job
market and career opportunities in the coming 1-2 decades
have inspired young students to pursue careers
in circuits and systems. In 2022, there has been a resurgence
of in-person academic conferences and a restoration
of international personnel exchanges. ISCAS 2022
was held in a hybrid format in Austin, Texas from May
28th through June 1st and more researchers attended
this event in person than last year. We also saw an increase
in the number of local conferences, workshops,
and educational and outreach events and our magazine
reported these events and activities through the column
" CAS in the World, " showcasing the exciting developments
in our society. Our new editorial team members
from various locations worldwide have contributed a
multitude of engaging stories about local CAS activities.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022
not only shocked the world but also the academic community.
In the second issue of our magazine in 2022, we
published an interview with Professor Gabor C. Temes.
He spoke about what happened in Hungary in 1956 and
how he and his wife were able to escape to Canada during

the chaos. He later became a world-renowned scholar in
analog circuits. At the end of the interview, Professor
Temes expressed his hope that Western governments
would extend the same kindness to the large number of
Ukrainian refugees seeking asylum. In another interview
published in the fourth issue of our magazine, Professor
Ingrid Daubechies was asked about being the first female
recipient of the National Academy of Sciences Award in
Mathematics. She provided an inspiring answer, stating
that it was not her problem but society's problem, as
there are inaccurate perceptions about women. She also
emphasized her commitment to encouraging women
and young girls to pursue mathematics and to believe
in their ability to excel in the field. Professor Sanjit Mitra
and Professor Ron Rohrer also offered their advice to the
youth during their interviews regarding research and career
growth. This aligns with the mission of the IEEE CAS
Society, which aims to foster technological innovation
and excellence in fundamentals, emerging directions
and application of circuits and systems for the benefit of
humanity through an interdisciplinary community.
In the first issue of our magazine in 2023, we feature
an interview with Professor Adel Dedra, an accomplished
expert in the field of communication and
instrumentation systems applications. I hope you find
the feature articles on energy efficiency in video communications,
cooling systems for nanoscale circuits,
and the structural stability of complex networks to be
informative and enjoyable. Additionally, you can stay
updated on CAS society events through our " CAS in
the world " column. As the tradition of our magazine,
the IEEE CAS President, Dr. Manuel Delgado-Restituto
delivers the " President's Message " to the CAS members
in this issue too.
In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit.
Rabbit represents grace, kindness, and good luck. May
the gentle and graceful energy of the rabbit guide you
toward new opportunities and adventures in 2023!
