IEEE IoT Technical Community and IEEE CASS
Abstract
The IEEE IoT Technical Community (TC) is an IEEE's important,
multi-disciplinary, cross-platform initiative. It has a lead society,
the ComSoc, four major societies, including IEEE CASS, and seven
participating societies. The IEEE World Forum on IoT and the
IEEE IoT Magazine are significant activities of the IEEE IoT TC.
I. The IEEE IoT Technical Community
I
n 2014, IEEE launched the IEEE IoT Initiative. This year,
with the new MOU in effect for 2023-2025, the name
was changed to IEEE IoT Technical Community (TC).
The IEEE Internet of Things TC is one of IEEE's important,
multi-disciplinary, cross-platform initiatives.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most exciting
technological developments in the world today, and the
global technical community is uniting around the innovative
content, resources, and collaboration opportunities
provided by the IEEE IoT TC.
The mission of the IEEE IoT TC is to serve as the
gathering place for the global technical community
working on the Internet of Things, to provide the platform
where professionals learn, share knowledge, and
collaborate on this sweeping convergence of technologies,
markets, applications, and the Internet, and together
change the world.
The lead sponsor of the IEEE IoT Technical Community
is the IEEE Communications Society. The four
major sponsors are IEEE Circuits and Systems Society,
IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation, IEEE
Reliability Society, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
There are also seven participating societies: IEEE
Control Systems Society, IEEE Electron Devices Society,
IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, IEEE Microwave
Theory and Techniques Society, IEEE Power and Energy
Society, IEEE Power Electronics Society, and IEEE Solid
State Circuits Society. IEEE CASS became a major sponsor
in January 2021.
The main coordination of the IoT TC is an IoT TC
Steering Committee (SC). Besides the Steering Committee,
the IoT TC has six standing committees:

The IoT TC also has four Working Groups, the Education
WG, the Smart Cities WG, the Artificial Intelligent
of Things WG, and the Aerial and Space Systems
for IoT WG.
The IoT Technical Community Membership, considering
the member societies has 19,529 members. Table 1
shows the member levels.
II. IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT)
The main event of the IEEE IoT TC is the IEEE World Forum
on Internet of Things (WF-IoT), the first edition of
which was organized in 2014. The WFIoT had 300-800
attendees year after year despite the pandemic, with
a strong industry participation of approximately 50%
of attendees. The ninth edition will be organized in
Aveiro, Portugal, from October 12 to 27, 2023, where
from October 12 to 13 it will be virtual, from October
16 to 20 it will be hybrid, and from October 23 to 27 it
will also be virtual.
This year, the theme of WFIoT 2023 is " The Blue Planet:
A Marriage Between Sea and Space. " Its objective is
to recognize the increasing importance of the sea in our
daily activities and to point out the importance of space
for our future as a sustainable society. IEEE WFIoT2023
brings together IoT experts from around the world and
