he 2012 IEEE Panel of Editors meeting took place in San
Francisco, California and I was pleased to be one of the
attendees at this meeting. It was a fruitful meeting where
various matters were discussed and updated; such as moving
towards open access journal, interactive content update, author
network and mobile products development etc. I believe these initiatives will benefit our publications greatly and provide greater
values to the members of CIS.
In this issue, we feature the applications of Type-2 fuzzy logic systems. Fuzzy
logic surrounds us even if we have not been consciously aware of its presence. My
bowl of rice for dinner is cooked with a fuzzy logic embedded rice cooker that
possesses the intelligence to sense the amount of rice and water necessary to cook
up a perfect pot of rice. The fragrance of the fuzzy cooked rice never fails to make
me hungry!
And while I'm satisfying my hunger pangs, my laundry is in a fuzzy logic
embedded washing machine that senses the amount of clothes in the washing drum
so as to fill up with the appropriate amount of water to ensure the clothes are
thoroughly washed, while reducing water wastage. How convenient! It has certainly
come a long way since Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh introduced the concept of fuzzy
logic in 1973.
We have entered now into the realm of real world applications for Type-2 fuzzy
logic; where the prevalence of human uncertainties is taken into account and Type-2
