T

he core technologies of computational intelligence, neural networks,
fuzzy logic and evolutionary computation have always been quite popular
among engineers, especially among students. Currently, 5% of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS)
members are Student Members (StM)
and 12% are Graduate Student Members
(GSM). The IEEE CIS is a young society
(since 2001 as Neural Networks Society
and since 2003 as CIS), while membership has the potential to grow steadily.
Student Benefits

For a small CIS membership fee of $13
per year and $6.50 for six months, in
addition to the IEEE basic fees, both
StMs and GSMs can gain access to a
network of professionals and academics
who work in computational intelligence theory and applications. In addition, all student members receive
significantly reduced rates for CISsponsored conferences, as well as the
opportunity to apply for travel grants,
summer research grants and summer
school scholarships; there is also an
Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award.
Through the CIS social media, students
are able to connect to other students as
well as with members working in the
industry or academia, discuss and
receive feedback on CI-related research,
get tips on publishing at the Society's
prestigious journals, as well as partici-

pate in webinars and gain knowledge
on the field's state-of-the-art.
Graduate Student Members pay
membership as students but have the
voting rights of members; they can sign
petitions to create chapters and are eligible to serve as officers, e.g., as chapter
chairs. In addition, recent graduates are
automatically added to the GOLD
(Graduates of the Last Decade) member
community of young professionals.
Student Volunteering

Student Members are given the opportunity to volunteer locally through their
University's IEEE CIS Student Branch
Chapter, and Graduate Student Members can work as volunteers in their
local IEEE CIS Chapter. In addition,
StMs and GSMs can participate in some
of the multinational IEEE CIS Subcommittees. The IEEE CIS Student Activities Subcommittee is in charge of
student matters, and is under the Mem-

ber Activities Committee. The objectives
of the IEEE CIS Student Activities Subcommittee are to increase the awareness
and interest of the students in CI,
increase the interaction between students and professional members, make
recommendations to the CIS on student-related matters, provide assistance
to CIS Student Chapters, as well as disseminate CIS-sponsored activities, such
as scholarships, summer schools, student
travel grants etc. Every year, a call for
volunteers is announced by the Chair of
the Student Activities Subcommittee to
all CIS members.
If an IEEE CIS Student Member or
Graduate Student Member is interested
in promoting CI worldwide, he or she
should consider volunteering to some of
the bodies; besides the fun part, this can
be a rewarding experience and a chance
to meet people who are highly
interested in computational intelligence.
