Grand Challenges of Computational Intelligence

I

n September 2012, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society
organized the Workshop on Grand Challenges of Computational
Intelligence. The Workshop took place in Cyprus, in conjunction
with a scheduled meeting of the CIS Executive Committee. The aim of
the Workshop was for top leaders in the field to provide some key ideas
and personal thoughts about what they consider to be the grand challenges of computational intelligence in the years to come. The following
leaders in computational intelligence presented their ideas and participated in the panel discussion: Piero Bonissone (General Electric Research, USA); Xin Yao (University of Birmingham, UK); Johan Suykens (KU Leuven, Belgium); Jennie Si (Arizona State, USA);
Freddy Lecue (IBM Research, Ireland); Gary Yen (Oklahoma State, USA); Hisao Ishibuchi
(Osaka Prefecture University, Japan); and Pablo Estevez (University of Chile), while I had the
pleasure and honor of coordinating the panel discussion. During the Workshop, the presenters discussed current and future technological trends and provided inspiration about upcoming grand challenges in computational intelligence, such as better understanding of how the
human brain works, nature-inspired computing, human-computer interaction, and algorithms for handling Big Data in real time. Even though you may have missed this stimulating Workshop, all the talks and the panel discussion were video recorded and can be viewed
from the IEEE CIS
web page.
Quite often, we
get caught up in our
little research world,
thinking about our
next paper or some
technical report that
we need to complete,
and we forget to
consider the larger
picture and how our
work fits in the grand scheme of things. It is useful and refreshing to step back once in a
while, to zoom out and think about the impact of our research achievements, where we
want to be in 5 or 10 years, and how that matches with future technological trends. The ability to zoom in and out as needed is, in fact, a key ingredient of the research methodology.
The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society is making every effort to facilitate such events
for its membership. As technology moves forward, computational intelligence will play a key
role in scientific and technological developments. The vision for our Society is to be at the
forefront of these new advances and developments in the area of computational intelligence-whatever they may be-by promoting both fundamental research and applications.
