Remarks

Message from the New Editor-in-Chief

elcome to the ninth year of IEEE Computational
Intelligence Magazine (CIM). The inaugural issue of CIM
was published in February 2006 as the official magazine of
IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS). Gary G. Yen
worked hard for CIM as the founding Editor-in-Chief from 2006
to 2009 until Kay Chen Tan took over in 2010. Through their dedicated effort, and with generous support from the members of CIS,
the magazine has become one of the most successful and influential periodical publications in the field of computational intelligence. Kay Chen Tan mentioned in his first
Editor's Remarks in the February 2010 issue that the impact factor for CIM was
2.535 (the impact factor for 2008). I am happy to report that the figure for CIM has
now risen to 4.629 (the impact factor for 2012), according to the most recent Journal
Citation Reports by Thomson Reuters.
I feel greatly honored to have this opportunity to work for CIM as Editor-inChief. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the CIS Executive and
Administrative Committees for supporting my appointment. My deepest appreciation
goes to Kay Chen Tan for his continuous encouragement and support. He helped me
tremendously during this period of transition. Although I am writing the Editor's
Remarks as the Editor-in-Chief, it is he who completed almost all the preparations
for the present issue.
I will continue the current style of CIM as a periodical publication with two important roles. In one role, CIM serves as a society-internal medium for communicating
information to CIS members on the various activities of CIS, such as publications, conferences, educational programs, awards, and elections. In its second but equally significant
role, CIM serves as a high-quality peer-reviewed journal, covering all areas of CI research.
Since CIM is sent to all CIS members, I would like to push for the publication of papers
that will be of interest to the entire membership. CIM will particularly welcome papers
on the applications of CI technologies and survey papers on emerging research areas in
CI, as well as research papers on inter-disciplinary and hybrid CI technologies.
Natural language processing (NLP) is featured in this issue. I'm not sure you
encounter this, but when I read e-mails, I sometimes have difficulty grasping the
sender's true intention in a sentence, even after reading the e-mail several times. I
learned from the articles featured in this issue that computers have similar difficulties
in NLP. It seems that there are many research topics that must be further addressed in
relation to current developments in NLP, and I believe that CI technologies have the
potential to play an important role in tackling these topics.
As the current Editor-in-Chief, I look forward to working with you to further
improve CIM. Without your help in the form of paper submissions, paper reviews,
and special issue proposals, there will be little I can do for CIM. I would like to
encourage you to contact me at hisaoi@cs.osakafu-u.ac.jp with any suggestions, comments, and inquiries. Suggestions about topics for future issues are particularly welcome and will be greatly appreciated.
