Computational Intelligence - February 2015 - 15

It seems that the new research presented at the conference gets more and
more relevant for the game industry.
This can be concluded from the variety
of treated topics as well as from the
number of participants from industry.
Next to papers and demos, six competitions were held at the conference, of
which five were AI/bot competitions:
❏ Fighting game competition
❏ Human-like bots competition
❏ General video game playing
❏ Geometry friends
❏ StarCraft AI competition.
While the winners of these competitions were determined by the competition organizers, the student video competition was decided live via ballot in the
closing session. Prizes for the competitions were generously donated by aido,
the alumni association of the computer
science department of TU Dortmund
University. The student video competition has been supported by the IEEE
CIS, which also awarded two student
travel grants. These have been given to
Jeffrey Tsang (Canada) and Javier Viedma
(Spain). Further support was received by
the European Research Center for
Information Systems (ERCIS, headquarters in Münster, Germany).
As the CIG is the most important
conference for the Games Technical
Committee (GTC) of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, a committee meeting was held by the current
GTC chair, Philip Hingston, in order to
coordinate the research activities and
events of the coming months.

Human-Like Bots Competitions from Frank Wiesenfeller of the Alumni Association of Computer Science Dortmund e.V. (middle).

To conclude, we gratefully acknowledge the support received from the IEEE
Computational Intelligence Society and
the other sponsors of the conference. We
are also indebted to the organizing committee and the local conference assistants.
In our view, and according to the feed-

back we obtained from the participants,
the conference was a great success. More
information about CIG 2014 can be
obtained at www.cig2014.de.
The next CIG will be held in Tainan,
Taiwan, August 31 to September 2,
2015. Hope to see you there!

(continued from page 13)

I strongly encourage you to proactively participate and organize activities. If
you are not a member of IEEE CIS, I
would encourage you to become one to
receive the great benefits the society provides. Particularly, for young researchers,
to establish social relationships, connect to
their peers and broaden their view of CI

research directions, CIS provides a great
platform and offers great opportunities. If
you want to participate in any CIS member activities, or create new initiatives,
please contact me at pcchung@ee.ncku.
edu.tw. Only with your active participation can CIS continue its high-level activities and form new initiatives. I look for-

ward to working with you on the CIS
member activities, making the society
welcoming to all of us. It is we who make
the society how it shall be. CIS is our academic social family and we want it to be
comfortable, warm, and supportive to all
the members of this big family.
