this, he was Associate Professor at
Leiden University (1996-2002), department leader at the Center for Applied
Systems Analysis in Dortmund, Germany (1994-2002), and CTO of NuTech
Solutions Inc., Charlotte, NC (1999-
2009). Since 2009 he is co-founder of
divis intelligent solutions GmbH, Dortmund, Germany. Thomas received his
Diploma degree in Computer Science
from the University of Dortmund, Germany, in 1990, and his Ph.D. degree in
Computer Science from University of
Dortmund, Germany, in 1994. His
Ph.D. supervisor was Prof. Hans-Paul
Schwefel, one of the inventors of evolution strategies.
Thomas has ample experience in
industrial collaborations, with companies such as 3M, Audi, BMW, Daimler,
Ford, Honda, ThyssenKrupp, Tata Steel,
Unilever, Volkswagen, and many others.
He has raised significant funding from
funding agencies as well as from industrial partners, and conducted a large
number of projects in academia, industry, and combinations of both.
Thomas' current research interests
include developing advanced evolutionary algorithms for optimization
with a limited budget of objective
function evaluations, the application of
evolutionary algorithms to industrial
problems, the combination of data
mining and optimization, experimental
optimization, drug design by evolutionary computation, and applications
such as industrial process data mining
and optimization.
Thomas has more than 200 publications, including a monograph entitled
Evolutionary Algorithms in Theory and
Practice (OUP, 1996), a recent book on
Contemporary Evolution Strategies
(Springer, 2013), 2 handbooks, 8 edited
conference proceedings, 40 journal articles, more than 130 conference articles,
and 25 book chapters. He has been program chair of various conferences in
the field, including Parallel Problem Solving from Nature, Evolutionary Programming, International Conference on Genetic
Algorithms, and IEEE Conferences on Evolutionary Computation, and has been
working with Hans-Paul Schwefel

when the Parallel Problem Solving from
Nature Conference Series was initiated.
He also served as an associate editor
of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary
Computation and the Journal of Evolutionary Computation, as well as the Natural
Computing and Theoretical Computer Science journals, and he is associate editor of
the Natural Computing book series and
co-editor of the Handbook of Natural
Computing (2013) as well as the Handbook of Evolutionary Computation (1997).
Thomas received the best dissertation
award of the German "Gesellschaft für
Informatik" (GI, Society for Computer
Science) in 1995, and has been elected
in 2003 to the grade of fellow of The
International Society for Genetic and
Evolutionary Computation in recognition of sustained and significant contributions to the field and the community.

putational intelligence, fault diagnosis
and distributed agents. Prof. Polycarpou
has published more than 250 articles in
refereed journals, edited books and refereed conference proceedings, and coauthored 6 books. He is also the holder
of 6 patents.
Prof. Polycarpou is a Fellow of the
IEEE and served as the President of the
IEEE Computational Intelligence Society between Jan. 2012-Dec. 2013. He
has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the
IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks
and Learning Systems between 2004-
2010. He participated in 60 research
projects/grants, funded by several agencies and industry in Europe and the
United States. In 2011, Prof. Polycarpou was awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC)
Advanced Grant.
