(M'01-SM'04F'12) is currently
Chief Executive
Officer at Natural
Selection, Inc. in
San Diego, California. With a Ph.D. in
biology from U.C. Los Angeles, Dr. Fogel's primary research interests focus on
the application of computational intelligence to problems in the biomedical
sciences, specifically in the areas of genomics, diagnosis, and high-throughput
drug discovery. He co-edited a volume
on Evolutionary Computation in Bioinformatics published in 2003 (Morgan
Kaufmann) and Computational Intelligence
in Bioinformatics, published in 2008 (Wiley-IEEE Press). Dr. Fogel also leads Natural Selection's efforts in problem solving
for industrial customers in a broad variety of contexts as well as defense and
homeland security related efforts. He
holds three patents, over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the technical literature, and has received several awards,
including, most recently, the 2012 Sigma
Xi San Diego Section Distinguished Scientist Award.
Dr. Fogel is a Fellow of the IEEE and
member of Sigma Xi. He currently
serves as Editor-in-Chief of BioSystems
and was previously an associate editor

for IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary
Computation, IEEE/ACM Transactions on
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics,
and IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine in addition to four other journals.
He was elected to IEEE CIS AdCom
for two terms (2004-2009) before serving two terms on IEEE CIS ExCom as
VP Conferences (2010-2013). Dr. Fogel
also previously chaired the IEEE CIS
Bioinformatics and Bioengineering
Technical Committee (2004-2006) and
IEEE CIS History Subcommittee
(2008-2009), represented IEEE CIS on
the Medical Technology Policy Committee of IEEE-USA (2010-2012),
acted as liaison to IEEE Press (2007-
2009), and also served on the IEEE CIS
Strategic Planning Committee (2011-
2013). Dr. Fogel has served as Conference Chair (2010) and Program Chair/
Co-Chair (2001, 2004, 2006) for the
IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, General Chair (2004, 2005),
Finance Chair (2008, 2010), Program
Chair (2007), and Local Arrangements
Chair (2012) for the IEEE Conference
on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology,
in addition to other conferences and
currently serves as Finance Chair for the
2014 IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence. He is an IEEE
CIS Distinguished Lecturer.

respectively. He
received the Ph.D.
degree from Osaka
Prefecture University in 1992. Since
1987, he has been
with Osaka Prefecture University as a research associate
(1987-1993), an assistant professor
(1993), an associate professor (1994-
1999) and a full professor since 1999.
He has been a Chair or Co-Chair of
a number of international conferences
such as Program Chair of IEEE CEC
2010, General Chair of ICMLA 2011,
Program Co-Chair of FUZZ-IEEE
2011-2013, Technical Co-Chair of IEEE
CEC 2013, Program Co-Chair of IEEE

2013). Currently, he is the Editor-inChief of IEEE Computational Intelligence
Magazine (2014-2015) and the Treasurer
of International Fuzzy Systems Association (2013-2017). He is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on Fuzzy Systems (2004-2014), IEEE Trans. on
Evolutionary Computation (2007-2014),
IEEE Trans. on Cybernetics (2013-2014),
and IEEE Access (2013-2014). He has
published at least one paper every year
in the FUZZ-IEEE Proceedings in
