o you know about the CIS Distinguished Lecturers Program (DLP)? I bet that most of you are not familiar with
this program. Actually, I did not know anything about this
program until I started working as the CIS Vice-President for
Technical Activities six years ago. According to the CIS DLP
webpage, "the program supports local CIS chapters by helping
them to invite leading researchers in their respective fields." The
program supports the DLP lecturers travel expenses. Thus local chapters can invite a
DLP lecturer by taking care of his/her local expenses only. You can find a list of lecturers together with their lecture topics on the CIS DLP webpage. The webpage
explains how to invite a DLP lecturer to your local chapter as well as how to nominate a DLP lecturer. Last year, I did my first DLP lecture at the Kolkata Chapter in
India. I enjoyed very active discussions with the chapter members. My second DLP
lecture will be in Mexico this year. I am looking forward to a similar experience.
The CIS provides a wide variety of activities for members. However, it seems to
me that most of you (including me) do not fully utilize them. For example, I had
never watched a CIS webinar until I read a forwarded e-mail about a webinar by
Aimin Zhou last November. His webinar was interesting. This enticed me to visit the
CIS website for other webinars. I was surprised to find a list of about 200 videos
under the "CIS Video Collection". Some of them are plenary talks and tutorials from
our CIS-sponsored conferences. Others are webinars and short introductions to specific topics in computational intelligence. I strongly urge you to periodically visit the
CIS website where you will find a lot of useful information about various activities
such as Graduate Student Research Grants, Conference Travel Grants, Competitions,
Awards, Fellows, Senior Members and Summer Schools. The current CIM issue
includes short bios and photos of the newly elected CIS AdCom members and the
new IEEE Fellows of our society. You can find information about the AdCom election and the Fellow nominations on the CIS website too.
The feature topic of the current CIM issue is "Computational Intelligence Software". Software has been an important subject in computer science. Many of us may
agree that its importance will continue to increase in our highly-computerized societies. I believe that you will enjoy all these articles in the current issue. The CIM will
also publish a special issue on "Search Based Software Engineering". The paper submission deadline is July 15, 2016. Some of you may know that the IEEE Transactions
on Evolutionary Computation will also publish a special issue on the same topic.
This is an interesting coincidence with serendipity at play. Two special issue proposals
on the same topic were submitted independently by different groups of proposers
almost simultaneously. I hope that both special issues will be a great success. I am
looking forward to seeing all of you at IEEE WCCI 2016 in Vancouver, which has
received a record-breaking number of 3,015 paper submissions.
