he IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) has
been enthusiastic about geographical outreach activities.
When I was the CIS Vice-President for Technical Activities
in 2010-2013, I had a number of great opportunities to join those
activities in Brazil, China, India, and Cyprus. The most unforgettable of these activities was a series of post-conference workshops
after FUZZ-IEEE 2013 (Hyderabad, India, July 7-10, 2013). A
four-day tour started with an early morning flight on July 11 together with Nik Pal
and CT Lin. The first workshop was in Chennai where each of us gave a one-hour
lecture. On July 12, we attended another workshop in Bhubaneswar. The third and
fourth workshops were at IIT Delhi on July 13 and IIT Kanpur on July 14. The
main audience in the first two workshops was undergraduate students, while the last
two were mainly attended by younger researchers. I adjusted my presentation material every night to make it more suitable for the next day's audience.
After four workshops in as many days and five domestic flights, I was exhausted,
but I have many fine memories of the India tour. After returning from India, I
undertook a similar but private tour in China. I visited five universities during my
six-day tour from Shanghai to Wuxi, Hefei and Xi'an in November 2013. This year,
I attended WCCI 2014 in Beijing (see the photo below). WCCI 2014 is the largest
technical event of the IEEE CIS in 2014. Next year, we will have SSCI 2015 in
South Africa. As far as I know, this will be the first major CIS conference in Africa.
The IEEE CIS continues to organize a wide variety of international activities. Most
of these are based on proposals from CIS members.
The feature topic of this issue is "Computational Intelligence in Production and
Logistics Systems". This topic was proposed more than one year ago by the guest
editors of this issue. I hope that all of you enjoy the interesting articles in this issue.
