the University of Braunschweig as a
professor of computer science in 1986.
He is a full professor since 1996 at the
Faculty of Computer Science of the
Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany.
Rudolf Kruse has coauthored 15
monographs, 25 books, and more than
450 refereed technical papers (Google
h-index: 50) in various scientific areas.
His monograph "Statistics with Vague
Data", D. Reidel Publishing Company,
1987, was the first monograph about
fuzzy sets in data analysis. His group is
successful in various industrial applications in cooperation with companies
such as Volkswagen, SAP, Daimler, British Telecom, and many others. Dr. Kruse
is the mentor of 40 doctoral students
and more than 400 master students.
Together with two doctorates, he
received the outstanding paper award in
IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems in
1996. Dr. Kruse has been awarded the
titles Fellow of the International Fuzzy
Systems Association (IFSA), and Fellow
of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI, for merly
ECCAI) in 2003. He was elevated to be
an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to
fuzzy learning in 2005. His current
research interests include Data Science
and Intelligent Systems.
Evolutionary Computation Pioneer
Award
Kalyanmoy Deb, Michigan State University, USA
For pioneering contribution, development,
and leadership in evolutionary multi-criterion
optimization.
Kalyanmoy Deb is
Koenig E n d owe d
Chair Professor at the
Department of Electrical and Computer Eng ineer ing in
Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing, USA. He
also holds a professor position at the
Department of Computer Science and
Engineering, and at the Department of
Mechanical Engineering in MSU. Prof.
Deb's main research interests are in
genetic and evolutionary optimization

algorithms and their application in optimization, modeling, and machine learning. He is largely known for his seminal
research in developing and applying
Evolutionary Multi-Criterion Optimization (EMO). His Computational
Optimization and Innovation (COIN)
Laboratory (http://www.coin-laboratory.
com) at MSU promotes research in these
areas. He consults with various industries and software companies. Due to his
pioneering contributions to EC and
mainly to EMO, Prof. Deb has been
recognized with the 'IEEE EC Pioneer
award', 'Infosys Prize' in 2012, 'TWAS
Prize' in Engineering Sciences in 2012,
'CajAstur Mamdani Prize' in 2011, 'JC
Bose National Fellowship' in 2011, 'Distinguished Alumni Award' from IIT
Kharagpur in 2011, 'Edgeworth-Pareto'
award in 2008, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar
Prize in Engineering Sciences in 2005,
'Thomson Citation Laureate Award'
from Thompson Reuters, 'Bessel Research Award' from Germany. He has
also received an Honorary Doctorate
from University of Jyvaskyla, Finland in
2013. His 2002 IEEE-TEC NSGA-II
paper is judged as the Most Highly
Cited paper and a Current Classic by
Thomson Reuters having more than
25,000 citations. He is a fellow of IEEE,
ASME, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), three science and engineer ing academies from India and
International Society of Genetic and
Evolutionary Computation (ISGEC).
He has written two text books on optimization and more than 475 international journal and conference research
papers with Google Scholar citations of
105,000+ with h-index of 104. He is in
the editorial board on 19 major international journals and a visiting professor at
a number of universities in Europe and
India. Since the early nineties, he proposed key algorithms and provided
salient research directions in EMO,
which helped shape the field. Beyond
his pioneering work in EMO, he was
instrumental in bringing EMO community closer to a contemporary field of
Multi-Cr iter ion Decision M a k i n g
(MCDM). His 30 years of research in
EC and EMO has taken the evolution-

ary optimization ideas beyond CIS
and to various scientific, engineering
and business fields, which are evident
from his high citation counts. EMO
algorithms are commercialized extensively and are regularly used by in dustries. More information about his
research can be found from http://www
