I think it is the human component
of robots which is not so obvious, for
instance: to understand the feelings, to
understand the subtlety of natural language (which is not obvious), robots
are able to perform [normal tasks] very
efficiently. But as far as we go to humanlike behaviour, it is more and more difficult and this is where fuzzy logic is
very useful in managing a kind of
subjective, informal way of interacting
with people.
Q: What are the new research
directions and applications in CI?

Estévez
There are several areas, in my case I
work with NN, so the idea is to classify
patterns but the traditional way to do
this is with labels. It is like teaching a kid
to read, we do this by telling the kid
how to pronounce the words, and then
after repeating many times the kid
learns. This is the same way for machines. So we are talking about ma chine learning.
You can teach a machine to do
something. But the problem is when
you need labels, this is not useful when
you have say, 100 million of data, there
is no way humans will label that. So
one important area is to do the same
without labelling. To be able to recognize the environment and the patterns
without humans telling the machine
what is there.

Keller
The population of the world is getting older so more and more resources
are being pushed into that arena, so
that's where I think a lot of activity is
going. And then of course you have all
the issues of cyber security and physical
security-e.g. landmines and parameters
detection. But all the cyber-attacks going
on, there is going to need to be an enormous amount of work done to try to keep
our [personal] data secure.

Abbass
The future is with connected data,
but what we need to start thinking
about is [how] to connect the smartness
that exists all over the place, and almost
independent of each other. How we can
actually leverage what we call distributed intelligence. Once we are able to
connect this intelligence we will quite
quickly see lots of advantages in society.
