The Wonders of Knowledge Transfer

ou may have once experienced or heard of the facts: The
skills for one sport can be useful for playing another sport,
the knowledge learned from a language can benefit you
learning another, and the experience of solving some problems
can help deal with others. (Incidentally, my skills developed from
Age of Empires are instrumental in StarCraft.) These are examples
of knowledge transfer, of applying previous knowledge or experiences to learn or tackle new related tasks. According to research in cognitive science
and education, knowledge transfer is influenced by acquisition of knowledge, context, experience, and even social interaction. The marvelous mechanism of knowledge transfer is indeed a stark indication of how extraordinary the human mind is.
I have been reminded of the wonders of knowledge transfer by the first feature
article on evolutionary transfer optimization in this issue. This article gives an overview of the existing works that utilize knowledge transfer to achieve better evolutionary optimization for efficiently solving problems, and also highlights the challenges
and future research directions in this field of study. In addition to this article, there are
two other articles in this issue's Features. The second article presents a surrogate-assisted
multifactorial evolutionary algorithm to address the high computational cost and
high-dimensional search space in minimax optimization for robust design. In particular, evolutionary multitasking is leveraged for concurrent optimization of multiple
problems. The third article proposes democratized learning, which aims to construct
large-scale distributed learning systems based on self-organization of agents. The specialized and generalized processes empower the learning system to evolve itself.
In the Columns, the first article provides a comprehensive review on the progresses
to date and indicates key research issues of robust optimization in the capacitated arc
routing problem with uncertainties. The second article develops a novel genetic programming approach to construct classifiers and learn cost intervals simultaneously for
unbalanced classification. The third article delineates an open-source Python library,
Spektral, facilitating implementation and test of graph neural networks.
The new CIS Vice President for Publications, Kay Chen Tan, the new CIS Vice
President for Education, Julia Chung, and the new CIS Vice President for Member
Activities, Sanaz Mostaghim, presented their vision statements in this issue. In addition,
the new Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, Carlos
A. Coello Coello, gave us an intriguing account of his life story and aspirations in
the interview.
