A Firm Grip on Our Reality

little while ago, on Netflix, I came across The Matrix again-a
classic and thought-provoking film. Rewatching it after so
many years, I still enjoyed the movie a lot but pondered
over Neo's world-a simulated reality built by intelligent machines
to control humans. At this moment, our world may not resemble
his world, but what about the future? We are already constantly
surrounded by technology of all sorts, and our dependence on it
only increases its influence on us. Technology is indispensable and its presence in our
lives is undeniable, yet we should not take it all for granted and lose ourselves among
all the convenience and information. Just as humans in The Matrix strive to regain
their reality, so too can we try to have a firm grip on ours.
This issue includes three articles in the Features. The first article introduces a novel
and computationally efficient transfer neuroevolution algorithm to address the issue of
slow neuroevolution in solving differential equations. In particular, the neuroevolution
method can exploit relevant exponential priors and reduce the risk of negative transfer. The second article presents a deep multi-scale neural network that leverages the
multi-frequency characteristics in EEG signals for brain-computer interface. To deal
with incomplete and noisy data, the third article puts forth a novel framework that
utilizes different sensor data and integrates job performance, physical, physiological
and psychological states to understand human behavior.
The Columns comprises two articles. The first article seeks to model the fraud
dynamics of a consumption tax system through evolutionary game theory, which
takes real-world data and scenarios into account for stability and robustness. Given that
past planned routes were not compatible with user requirements, the second article
proposes a two-fold time-dependent path planner to consider a more realistic path
planning scenario with time-dependent travel time and utility score. In Society Briefs,
we congratulate our newly elevated IEEE Fellows and heartily celebrate their outstanding achievements and contributions in their respective areas of expertise. We also
welcome our newly elected AdCom members who will help to govern and administer our society.
