Thomas Runkler is an
industrial researcher

currently in the position
of a Senior Principal
Research Scientist
for Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence,
and a Professor of Computer Science
at the Technical University of
Munich, Germany. He received the BS,
MS, and PhD degrees in Electrical
Engineering from the Technical University
of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1992 and
1995, respectively, and the habilitation
degree in Computer Science from the
Technical University of Munich, Germany,
in 2001. He was a postdoctoral
researcher at the University of West Florida
from 1996-1997. His main research
interests include data analytics and pattern
recognition (with a focus on clustering),
automation and control (fuzzy
control, in particular defuzzification, and
reinforcement learning), swarm based
optimization (ant colonies, particle
swarms, wasp swarms), machine learning
(white box and explainable models, preference
learning, Gaussian processes), and
semantic technologies (ontologies, logical
reasoning and explanations, recommender
systems, natural language processing).
He is working on a variety of real world
industrial applications, for example in
factory automation, process
industry
(steel, pulp and paper), and logistics (supply
chain management, mobility, traffic
management). He currently holds 28 patents,
and he published more than 200
papers in international journals and conferences
in the fields of data analytics
and artificial intelligence, published the
monograph " Data Analytics " , now in
the third edition, and co-authored the
book " Fuzzy cluster analysis: Methods
for classification, data analysis and image
recognition " . He has served regularly in
the organization and program committees
of leading international conferences
and workshops such as FuzzIEEE, WCCI,
SSCI, IPMU, IFSA, EUSFLAT, ECML,
GECCO, and PPSN.

Bernhard Sendhoff

GmbH. Since 2008, he is Honorary Professor
at the Technical University of Darmstadt,
Germany. For more than ten years
(until 2020), he was also Honorary Professor
at the School of Computer Science,
University of Birmingham, UK.
He is Associate Editor of the IEEE
Transactions on Evolutionary Computation
and of the IEEE Transactions on
Cognitive and Developmental Systems.
Under his leadership the Honda Research
Institute Europe GmbH received the
IEEE CIS Outstanding Organization
Award in 2014. He led the Emergent
Technology Technical Committee of the
IEEE Computational Intelligence Society
in 2006 and 2007. He is a Senior Member
of the Association for Computing
Machinery (ACM) and a Member of the
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
His h-index at Google Scholar is 48.
He published more than 250 reviewed
papers in journals and major conferences.
He has authored and co-authored more
than 35 patents. He has received as a coauthor
the IEEE Computational Intelligence
Magazine Outstanding Paper
Award in 2012.
He has served on Organization and
Program Committees and has given Plenary
Lectures for several major international
conferences, e.g., IEEE Congress
on Evolutionary Computation, IEEE
World Congress on Computational
Intelligence, Parallel Problem Solving
from Nature, and International Conference
on Artificial Neural Networks. He
has served on Advisory Boards for several
institutes and research programs.
His main research interests are the
application of evolutionary computation,
heuristic optimization, machine learning
and data science to complex engineering
problems. The cooperation between
intelligent systems and humans is equally
a focus of his research. This includes the
formation of hybrid AI, engineers teams
considering the special social dynamics of
hybrid team formation.
